Favorite places to shop in Tacoma

I’m not much of a shopper, really — never been big on malls, although I was once known to take one or two trips to the “Great Mall of America” when J was in early infancy, to do the stroller mall walk thing.

But there are a few places I’ve encountered in Tacoma where I would love to hang out for a while and browse. For some random reason (maybe because I’m putting off some work until the very last minute) I thought I’d list them here, now:

1. Wright Park Conservatory gift shop. I just keep thinking of this place. I got my mom to buy me a birthday present several months early here. Can’t wait to get it.

2. Childtrek Toys in Freighthouse Square. I bet there are other cool toy stores in Tacoma, but I haven’t gotten a chance to see them yet, and this one is brand new. The owner is really nice, and loves to talk toys.

3. The Garden Shop at Lakewold Gardens. Technically this is in Lakewood, not in Tacoma.  A fantastic place to buy gifties.

3. That big used book store near Freighthouse Square. According to Tacomamama, this place is actually called the Tacoma Book Center. But that name just isn’t that memorable. The place is, though. And I’m sure if I’d ever gotten more than two aisles into it, past the kids’ books, I’d be in heaven.

4. Half Price Books at Rainier Place. OK, maybe I shouldn’t have numbered these. How could Half Price Books fall to #4? I haven’t been to this location nearly as much as I’d have liked to. I have very very fond memories of all the visits we made to the Bellevue location (in Crossroads) when I was staying with my sis during business trips, before momhood.

5. King’s Books. I’ve only been here but once, with my mom, for a talk on eating locally. But I’ve seen them pop up at several other local events, like the Pierce County Reads program author talk. I’m on their mailing list, and hope to make it back for another talk soon.
