A snappi tune

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

So for at least four days now I’ve had the Schnappi theme song running through my head at least part of the day, after discovering it on YouTube. When will this end?

Ride on, peace horse!

The customary 4th of July boat parade on the lake behind our house included this unusual equine sporting a green peace symbol, which garnered the most cheers and applause from our lanai:

(Note also the rare absence of flag/swag — another unusual aspect of this boat compared to the standard 4th of July boat parade fare.  A closer look does reveal that one person is wearing a red shirt, one a white, and one blue.  And then there’s a black dog as well!)

$880 and 70 years…

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I just tried the Nature Conservancy’s online calculator for estimating your carbon footprint and determined that, while our footprint for this household of 4 is supposedly much smaller than the US average (44 tons versus 110; the world average is 22), to offset that with the Nature Conservancy’s offset program (mainly planting trees, I believe) would cost $880 and take up to 70 years. And that’s just for one year’s worth of carbon.
